The earth pyramids of Breien near Steinegg are a fascinating natural display of erosion at work. To get to these hoodoos, start at Steinegg and take an easy 3-hour hike (following the marking "gelbe Pyramiden" – "Yellow Pyramids") to Katzenbachschlucht and through Lahnenweg trail. This trail takes you just below the earth pyramids. Continue on via Raffeinerhof up to Dosser-Kreuz and from here, you hike down to the imposing spires. On your way back, take trail no. 2 via Katzenbachweg back to Steinegg.

By the way: It should be well-known that the earth pyramids are a result of natural erosion; however, the world of legends gives a much more appealing explanation for the creation of the Steinegg hoodoos.

Legend of the Steinegg Earth Pyramids
There used to be a charming, fertile meadow in this area. Throughout the ages, the farmers who rented and worked this land used some of their profit to support the local pastor. One of the farmers, however, refused to pay his rent, even after receiving a number of reminders and he was brought to court in Steinegg. Since there were no certificates regarding the meadow and the farmer swore on oath (even though he knew better) that the meadow belonged to him, the court deeded it to him. The pastor was gloomy, but the farmer was proud. On the same day, however, dark clouds gathered over the property and turned the day into night. Everyone knew that something ominous was going to happen. A heavy downpour came down, lightning flashed, thunder rolled; it was worse than anything the Steinegg community had ever experienced. Finally, in the morning, the thunderstorm seemed to let up. When the farmer wanted to go out to mow the lawn on his meadow, he couldn't believe his eyes. All he saw was a deep bluff, out of which spires and tent rocks protruded into the sky. God had judged, but differently than people...more legends of the Dolomites.
