Chapel of St. Agatha
Place: Deutschnofen
St. Agatha church is located on a wooded hill close to Unterkoflhof, in a spot characterized by
absolutely peaceful serenity and quiet. It is still not clear why this church was built so far away from any town or village. The spot may have been a settlement from ancient times. Mythical Kegelberg Mountain is situated in close proximity. And we know that there are long deserted mines in this area.
This is an old church, originally built in the Romanesque style. In later times, it was completely renovated to display a more
Gothic architectural style. The gorgeous,
stone-framed pointed-arch portal – adorned with statuettes of saints, vine branches and zigzag lines in a groove and with a staff that tapers into a root on the left and a shovel on the right – was constructed at the time of this remodel.
The interior of the church was completely renovated in the 17th century. The simple sandstone pulpit and the richly carved altar mount date back to this renovation. Unfortunately, all statues mounted onto the altar have been robbed by art thieves. The
altar painting – St. Agatha, St. Anna with Jesus and Mary – were painted by Ozario Giovanelli in 1619. St. Agatha also has some remains of old
wall paintings. The painting on the façade probably depicts St. Christophorus with baby Jesus and a rendering of the life of the patron saint. In the interior, you can make out parts of the birth of Christ.
To enter the church, pick up the key at Unterkofelhof, itself a building worth visiting because of its ancient building style. The kitchen and cellar of this building feature a beautiful old vault. The year 1559 is carved into the excellently preserved panels in the spacious room. A certificate of 1332 already mentions the Unterkoflhof in connection with the church.
Entrance: Church is closed. Go to Unterkoflhof to pick up the key.
