Welschnofen Parish Church
Place: Welschnofen
It is said that this first Christian church of Welschnofen was built in the
11th century. According to legend, the Welschnofen people first settled at "Im Loch" and on "Zischgl" and that's where they wanted to build a church. In the end they preferred to renovate an old
pagan temple, which stood right where this church is located, and rebuilt it into a church.
The first historical records of this church date back to 1298. In 1365, a chapel of St. Ingenuin is mentioned and from that point on St. Ingenuin appears to be the patron saint of this church. Records state that renovation activities took place during the first half of the 18th century.
Between 1827 and 1828, a
new church was built, which was completely destroyed (except for the tower) in 1965 and replaced by a new structure. The current parish church was
dedicated in May 1967 after a 2-year construction phase. It is a
modern church with a low aisle under a sharp, gabled roof.
The
parish tower (37 m high) is a testimony to the oldest building activity in the village. The foundation dates back to the 13th century. In 1741, it was renovated from the belfry upward. The tower was given its octagonal center and its onion dome in 1741.
