Eggental… Gate to the Dolomites

Obereggen – Deutschnofen – Eggen - Petersberg

The heart of hiker and nature lover alike will jump for joy when they gaze at the exquisitely beautiful scenery of the South Tyrolean Eggental valley and Etschtal plateau. These expansive highlands are home to Deutschnofen municipality with its scattered villages of Deutschnofen (1,350 m), Eggen (1,120 m) with Obereggen (1,550 m), Birchabruck (870 m) and Rauth (1,280 m), and also Petersberg (1,380 m) with its Maria Weissenstein pilgrimage site (1,520 m). The municipality covers an area of 112 km². The majority of the territory sits at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,500 m with its lowest point in Eggental gorge at 550 m and its highest point at Latemarspitze, or peak, at 2,800 m.

Tips for your stay in Eggental:

  • Skiing in Latemar Obereggen Ski Center: This area features 48 km of ski slopes, state-of-the-art lifts, rustic Alpine huts and an attractive program for the entire family! By the way, this ski area was awarded a prize for the best prepared ski slopes in the entire Alpine area!
  • Night skiing & sledding: Three days a week, night owls can ski and sled down the brightly illuminated slopes and runs from 7 to 10 pm. Additional info
  • Obbereggen snow park caters to all skill levels. Interested in learning how to freestyle? Then the "Drop in" freestyle day of Dolomiti Superski will be just the thing for you... The 'flying' experts of Obereggen Ski School initiate small groups into the secrets of awesome freestyle techniques.
  • Look forward to cross-country skiing at its best on more than 100 km of ski runs… against the fantastic backdrop of the Rosengarten!

Eggental Villages:

OBEREGGEN
Obereggen is a young, picturesque mountain village at the foot of the Latemar. Obereggen, part of the Eggen hamlet, has made a name for itself as a famous tourist resort due to its superb location at 1,550 m, its pleasant, charming scenery with meadows and forests made of spruce and larch trees, and particularly due to the exquisite panoramic views of the Latemar and the Zanggen, Weisshorn and Schwarzhorn mountains. At the end of the 1960's, hard-working locals built the first lifts for winter sports activities. This constituted the "birth" of Obereggen as the top winter sport area with a ski slope area of roughly 50 km. But not only that – it also launched the growth of tourism in this region, which brought an economic boost to the entire Eggental area.

DEUTSCHNOFEN
Deutschnofen sits on a plateau surrounded by meadows and forests and has unobstructed panoramic views of the entire area. The mountain ranges encircle the village, like the pews of an amphitheater: Schlern, Rosengarten and Latemar mountains are located to the east; Zanggen, Schwarzhorn and Weisshorn to the south. Across from Etschtal plateau stretches the Mendelgebirge mountain range from west to north. And beyond that, you can make out the Ortler massif (with mountains of over 4,000 m) and even the Ötztal and Stubaital Alps. Free buses shuttle several times a day between Deutschnofen and Obereggen ski area. Deutschnofen is also a cross-country paradise. Cross-country skiers and nature lovers will have the time of their lives with 50 km of superb runs. The village also offers a practice slope for kids and two sled runs. Deutschnofen center has everything a heart desires, including terrific places for shopping and eating out and also all necessary services for private and public use.

EGGEN
The hamlet of Eggen, which skirts the edge of a forest at the foot of the Latemar, includes the villages Birchabruck, Obereggen and Rauth.

PETERSBERG
Petersberg is nestled into lovely countryside. Weisshorn mountain looms high to the northeast. Toward the west, the plateau softly descends down to the last farms before it abruptly drops into Etschtal valley. In the south, the plateau extends to Aldein and is pierced only by Rennerbach creek. On the north, it separates Brantental valley from Deutschnofen. A number of farms are scattered across the wooded plateau, which encircles the dreamy mountain village of Petersberg with its idyllic village square located at 1,389 m. The Petersberg hamlet has a population of about 600. During the winter, Petersberg offers a practice slope for kids, many delightful runs for cross-country skiers and expansive winter hiking trails. There are free shuttle buses between Petersberg and Latemar-Obereggen Ski Center
