Info & Details on the Nature Reserve:
- Rosengarten-Schlern Nature Reserve is located in the western part of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. It covers an area of 6,796 ha and comprises the region between the villages of Tiers, Seis and Völs with the Rosengarten Nature Reserve forming its eastern border.
- The reserve is named after Schlern Mountain with its highest elevation Petz summit at 2,563 m. This impressive Dolomite massif with its sheer towers rearing in the west has become one of South Tyrol's most recognizable landmarks.
- The same is true for Rosengarten mountain range, famous for its crimson Alpenglow at sunset. Legend has it that this is the site of Dwarf King Laurin’s rose garden.
- The nature reserve also includes parts of the Seiser Alm, Europe’s vastest Alpine pastureland, as well as the mountain forests in the areas of Seis, Völs and Tiers, and the pristine Tschamintal valley.
- The Visitor Center in the Tschamintal valley near Tiers is located in an old Venetian sawmill, which bears witness to a long tradition of Alpine craftsmanship. The water-driven sawmill including living quarters has been completely restored and is now in perfect working order. The visitor center features a geological exhibit of the composition and structure of the Schlern massif. In addition to the visitor center in Tiers, a Nature Reserve information site was installed at the well-known Völser Weiher pond. This site provides the interested visitor with information on the pond's flora, the fauna of the reed bed and the types of fish that can be found in the pond. Pay attention to the superb world of birds populating the Nature Reserve. The info site displays a number of stuffed specimens with their bird songs and calls.
